  • Notes
    • Sophia was only 13 when her parents died of pneumonia, within 3 days of each other. Also dying was her older sister, Lidia Emma. Sophia went to live with her oldest sister, Martha, who had married the Rev. Robert Lenington and gone to Brazil as Presbyterian missionaries. They were pioneers to Brazil in 1868. This determined Sophia to become a missionary, also. She returned to the U. S. to work her way through college, graduating from the Univ. of Illinois with her teaching credentials. Heeding the call of the church, and eager to rejoin her sister, Sophia was assigned to teach in the girls' school (later McKenzie University), in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where she met and married the Reverend James Theodore Houston.
