EDWARD HEFELE, 55, ELECTRONICS EXPERT
Edward J. Hefele, electronics expert and inventor, died Tuesday in his home at 42-07 Elbertston Street, Elmhurst, Queens. He was 55 years old.
Mr. Hefele started his electronics career in boyhood when he was an amateur radio operator communicating with foreign lands on home-built equipment. In 1936, he invented the first cathode ray direction finder, which enables navigators to determine visually deviation from course by means of radio.
He also invented the streamlined antenna for planes and a blind landing system. His father was the late George Hefele, who for many years was the city's chief authority on bridges.
Mr. Hefele was a graduate of Fordham and Columbia Universities.
He is survived by his widow, Essie; three daughters, Carol, Mary and Irene; a sister, Miss Mary E. Hefele, and a brother, George Hefele Jr.
