- Walter graduated from Freedom High School in 1949. While there he was active in the FFA and held several offices, including: president of the NW District FFA in 1948, and president of the Freedom FFA chapter from 1947-1949. In 1949 he was awarded the Star Farmer of America Degree. In 1950 he was awarded the American Farmer award. He was elected National FFA President in 1950. That same year he was appointed an Honorary Colonel on lthe Governor's staff by Governor Johnston Murray. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M College (now OSU) in 1954 and then served in the US Army for two years as a pilot, serving part of that time in Korea.
