George Egert was a cultivator, or truck farmer, by profession. On November 5, 1821 he married Anastasia Jagli (Jaegli, Yagley, Yackley). She was born on November 22, 1799 in the same town as George - Wittisheim, France.
In 1851 they sailed with their seven children to America. The trip from Frane to New Orleans took six weeks by sailboat. Legend indicates that the journey was often rough and some days the ship was driven back by high winds farther than they had accomplished the day before. From the port of New Orleans they traveled up the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers to LaSalle, IL - then to DuPage County where they lived in the vicinity of Naperville, IL.
In approximately 1854, walking and herding their livestock.....George, Anastasia and their children brought their personal possessions and household goods in a covered wagon to Henry County. They settled in either Loraine or Yorktown Township.
George died at the age of 63 and anastasia at the age of 79. They had nine children, however many records are incomplete and only seven could be indentified; George, Michael, Barnhart, Theresa, Helen, Julienne and a young daughter who drowned at the lake northeast of Hooppole, IL.
No information is availabe (as of 1983) to indicate where George, Anastasia, and the young daughter are buried.
The following is the repsonse received from Wittisheim, France concerning our requests for the Egert family's emigration records:
"We acknowledge your request for the list of emigrants to America but are unable to respond. We are sure that a list existed at one time, however, due to the bombardment during WWII many of the documents were burned and destroyed. I believe that these are among the ones have been lost. This is from the records of Wittisheim, France."
