Marian J. Laines, 64, died Sept. 27 at the Hospice Care Center, Fitchburg, Wis., after a lengthy illness.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was a daughter of the late Adrian and Hulda (Nygren) Laines. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Wilkes College in 1958 and a master of education degree in counseling and guidance in 1963 from the Pennsylvania State University.
She was a research analyst for New York Life Insurance Co., New York City, and held a variety of professional positions in student activities at Penn State and at Austin College, Sherman, Texas. She held numerous positions in the division of university housing at the University of Wisconsin.
She received recognition for her leadership in the development of the Bradley Learning Community and Chadbourne Residential College and received the Norman Bassett Award for Outstanding Achievement in Student Services. She was president of the Wisconsin College Personnel Association and received the WCPA Annabelle E. Wolfe Leadership Award.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia (Laines) Lewis.
Surviving are her niece, Sharon (Lewis) Ruddy, Wyoming; nephew, Harry Lewis, Wind Gap; and aunt, Ruey Nygren, Wilkes-Barre.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Care Center, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, Wis., 53711. Arrangements were by the Cress Funeral Service, Madison.
