Letter from Angeline Hardcastle Raymond, undated, to Sally Raymond Harden, wife of Oliver, mother of Florence and Ralph. The actual whereabouts of the letter is unknown but the contents gave information about this line. It was in the possession of Florence Harden when she transcribed it for her brother, Ralph Harden in 1957. The actual letter dates between 1870-1910.
"I will tell you all I remember about my ancestors. My great, grandfather, your great, great grandfather was James Raymond a privy counselor of the State of Deleware and also a member of the Continental Congress. It was Clara Denney who tried to form a James Raymond Chapter of the DAR's of Delaware and wrote me asking me to become regent of it and I think she also asked your mother but I did not care to enter into it.
Then my great great grandfather, your great great great grandfather, a Hardscastle served in the Revolutionary War and they (his descendents) were so proud of it they sold the sword he used at his death for one dollar and Harry, my husband bought it and had it until his death, then I gave it to this Harry and that same old Col Beyer disinherited his grandson, because he was an old secessionist if he did live in PA.
One of Edith Firm(?) asked her if she had any French blood in her and she said, "I don't know but I will ask my Aunt". He said several traits of character and features indicated, and he had then made a study of things. Well I remember of a Raymond in New York some years ago, who wrote to Jake and me several times, who said he had found out that all Raymonds in this country were descendents of Count Raymond of Toulouse, a French Crusader who was in search of the holy grail. Now! Sarah, "What color do you think our blood must be after all that? Surely something better than blue.
