Name |
Thomas Wilhelm Nawman |
- Alternative Last Name: Nauman
|
Born |
18 Feb 1752 |
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States |
- Sources disagree on his origins: If he truly was a member of the Boston Tea Party, then it's likely he was born in Massachusetts. All parties agree that he settled in Clark County after living in Virginia. However, most, if not all, family histories start with him being born in Lancaster, PA.
- It's likely that his DOB was post 1750, as everything I can find on his father says that JG Nawman came to this country in 1750, and all of Thomas' supposed locations of birth are stateside.

- [S16144775032] A standard history of Springfield and Clark County, Ohio, Prince, Benjamin F., (The American historical society, 1922), 201.
The maternal grandparents Jacob and Elizabeth Kemp Nawman were natives of Virginia where the great grandfather Thomas Nawman was born in 1779. About 1801 Thomas Nawman brought his family to Clark County Ohio traveling across country with three wagons drawn by oxen. He took up land in German Township cleared his farm improved it and developed a large property. This farm was later divided among his children and Jacob Nawman received his share.
Note: DOB here is a typo, as his eldest son was born 1771, in Virginia.

THOMAS NAUMAN, SR. In the year 1809, Thomas Nauman, Sr., brought his family from Virginia and settled in the neighborhood of Tremont City, Clark County, Ohio. According to a statement made by Mr. John H. Blose, who in 1901 wrote an excellent history of German Township, Clark County, Thomas Nauman was one of the Revolutionary Patriots who could rightfully claim to have been a member of the "Boston Tea Party." He acquired a farm about four miles south of Tremont City, in Section 13, German Township, where he lived and died, and is buried in the Nauman Graveyard on his farm. He was born in Massachusetts, and after the Revolutionary War, settled in Shenandoah County, Virginia, before coming to Ohio.

The pioneers of 1806 were Daniel Kiblinger and Thomas Nauman, Jr., the former hailing from that State in after years designated as the "Mother of Presidents," whence so many of our pioneers came. Nauman, too, was a native of Virginia, and came to this vicinity on horseback and made his home with Matthias Friermood, who was a settler at a still earlier date. In 1809 Thomas Nauman, Sr., and family settled in the township. He was one of the patriotic men who, just prior to the War of 1776, assisted in throwing overboard the cargo of tea in Boston Harbor.

NAUMAN, THOMAS, (Clark Co.)
Member of Boston Tea Party. Br. 1754, Mass. Mar Catherine Baker in Va., Children: Henry, Samuel, Mary, Amanda. D Jan 1836, German Twp. Bur Vale, New Carlisle Pike. county cem not platted. MI: Name and dates. GM by family. Came to Ohio from Va, and located in German Twp. Farmer. Ref: Family records. Beers' Clark Co Hist. Fur infor Lagonda Chap.
Note: Oddly inaccurate, conflated Thomas and Thomas Jr. in dates, wife, and children.
- [S16144775040] Clark County Historical Society, Via Natalie Fritz, Curatorial Assistant.
Note: Work on this man was complicated by the unauthenticated story in Beers' History of Clark County, Ohio that he had participated in the Boston Tea Party. As I understand it, the D.A.R. steadily refused to recognize this alleged service. Also, the S.A.R. have a marker on, or near, his grave in Vale Cemetery, supposedly in recognition of his participation in the Boston Tea Party. Also, in the first volume/first edition of REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS BURIED IN OHIO, there is a serious error (besides his service) in the naming of his children. The children attributed to him are the children of his son, Thomas Nawman, Jr. Consequently, this record from Lagonda Chapter could not be used.
It was a long process to establish this line for Maye E. Meiling; and it is not known that it was finally accepted as given below. Mrs. Meiling died 2 Jan 1953. The record of another ancestor, Charles Kiser, Junior, was submitted for her, together with Thomas Nawman, and the Kiser record has been used in Urbana several times.
Thomas Nawman born 1749 at Lancaster Co., Pa
died 28 August 1821 in German Twp., Clark Co., O.
buried first in a family burial plot on the farm.
Body moved later to Vale Cemetery, where his monument may be seen.
Thomas Nawman, Jr. and his wife Catherine also buried there.
(It has been my understand that they were removed from the farm burial plot, because Elsie Belt Smeltzer, a descendant, said
to me, "We got all of our people out of there.")
The researcher continues on, mentioning Elizabeth Huffman, Thomas's wife who was born in Lancaster Co. and who died 27 Jan 1833 in Champaign County, Ohio while visiting a daughter, Barbara Nawman Zimmerman and was buried in the Zimmerman family cemetery. The text also mention's Thomas's son-in-law David Kizer, who was the the county's first recorder and an early surveyor (we actually own his compass and surveyor's chain).
