We note that other persons from the village of Westbroek, The Netherlands, contracted with Kiliaen van Rensselaer for employment in the colony of Rensselaerswijck, now Albany, New York, one of whom was Jan Teunisen, a carpenter; and that Jan Teunisen may properly name his Anthony Jansen in keeping with the Dutch custom of family naming. Anthony Jansen is the only person who adopted the surname "Westbroek" when he was required to distinguish himself from other contemporary Anthony Jansens when the British controlled the colonies.
